Posted by Karen Skerratt on 30 March 2023

Have you ever wondered why London Dry Gin is called "Dry"? Well, it's not as dry as the name implies. There are a variety of gins on the market today and each one has its own unique characteristics, but there's something special about London Dry Gin that sets it apart from other types of gin. Let's take a look at what makes this type of gin so special and why it deserves its namesake.

The History of London Dry Gin

London Dry Gin is a style of gin that originated in England centuries ago. In the 18th century, the term "dry" was used to describe spirits that had been distilled with juniper and other botanicals to create an aromatic aroma and flavour. The term "London" was added because this style of gin was most commonly produced in England's capital city.

What Makes London Dry Gin Unique?

London Dry Gins are different from other styles of gin because they contain no extra sugar or additives. This type of gin is made with only pure grain alcohol and natural botanicals such as juniper, coriander seed, angelica root, cardamom, orange peel, and lemon peel. These botanicals are what give London Dry Gins their unique flavour profile which can range from sweet to spicy depending on how they're distilled.

The Distilling Process

One thing that sets London Dry Gins apart from other gins is the distillation process used to make them. Traditional distillation methods involve using a copper still which helps to extract essential oils and aromas from the botanicals while also helping to remove any impurities in the alcohol that could affect its flavour profile or quality.
